Description:
- Helen is in an office with theatre manager Krause who locks the door and tries to kiss her. She is saved by playwright Arnold Train. A friend berates her because she antagonizes Krause and calls Krause to tell him her plan to square things between him and Train. Later, Helen gets into trouble with her landlady because she cannot pay the rent. She realizes that her career in the theatre may be over. She meets Krause who offers her a small part in a play "strictly business".
- Helen sneaks into her room, pricks her finger and swoons. In the meantime, Train is congratulated for his dramatic success, "Innocent Eyes". Helen, in her room, revives and worries about the interview tomorrow. She is starving and has money to buy bread only. She goes out in the rain, agonizes at the sight of a cake, and buys her bread. On her way home, she drops the loaf on the running board of a car. Looking for the loaf, she rummages through a basket on the pavement, and is accused of being a thief by the owner of the basket. The owner calls a policeman. Helen finally sees the loaf on the running board of the car, grabs it, and runs. <20mn>
