Description:
- Newsreel which begins with the following words printed on the screen: "PATHÉ'S WEEKLY -- Illustrates All Events of International Interest. Most Widely Read Periodical. 20 Million Readers". It presents the following stories: Galveston, Texas. The United States monitor Tonopah and the fleet of little submarines with her, weigh anchor and steam away ready for instant service, if need be, on the Mexican coast. There is a panning shot of the Tonopah, A submarine moves across the frame. This is repeated for the second and third submarine. London, England: The body of Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal, grand old man of Canada, is buried here with simple ceremonies. This shows the funeral procession leaving the church and the coffin being moved to the hearse. New York. N.Y.: Thirty-six rugged runners, clad in the lightest of garb, run a 26-mile Marathon outdoors in zero weather. Several collapsed; eight finished. The winner: Harry Parkinson, aged 30. This shows the runners coming through an archway, runners running down a street and the final shot, perhaps part of the finish. Small groups of people watch at various parts of the course. Newburgh, N.Y.: Six degrees below zero at Orange Lake -- but hardy skaters don't mind the cold and compete in the Eastern championship event. There are seven shots of speed-skating races, with crowds watching. Robert J. Logan of Montreal, winner of the quarter mile, half mile and one mile races. There is a medium shot of Logan, with crowd in background. Windsor, England: Over the hills and valleys on mettlesome mounts, following the hounds on the trail of the anise-seed bag, John Bull's blood flows fast and his cheeks glow red these bracing days of winter on the tight little isle. This shows a man racing on foot, pulling the bag. The dogs take a small fence, followed by the riders, and the dogs jump around their masters. Montreal, Canada: Land of high hills and snow, Montreal is the Paradise of winter sports. The air, like wine, exhilarates, and men of forty frolic like schoolboys on a holiday. There are various shots of people tobogganing, from the top, and the bottom of the hill. Men on snowshoes toss a boy up in the air. Men chase another man. Tut! Tut! Stay on your feet now, shoeshoe runners, and show us a real race, won't you? Sure. Here goes. There are shots of three snowshoe races. Many men fall as they race toward the camera. Women in snowshoes are visible also. Comic Section. By Bud Fisher. Oh, such a feeling as Jeff has -- but he follows the doctor's orders. The artist's hand paints in (white on black) Jeff in the doctor's room. Jeff asks him: Say, Doc, today's a holiday and I want to celebrate a little. I want to hire you to follow me around all day to look after my health. The doctor is surprised (he looks rather Freudian). Fade to black. The doctor and Jeff standing outside a bar. The doctor says: Lemme see your tongue again. Yes, you have a chill. I'll have to give you another prescription. Jeff says: Thanks, Doc. [No image visible in the next scene.] Jeff and the Doc at a table in a bar. Jeff says: "Say, Doc, you better make out a few extra while you can still see the typewriter. The doctor hiccups. Jeff and the Doc appear before a judge. Jeff says: "Hic, honest Judge. I never drink a-hic-except a little brandy . . . and only on my doctor's prescription.
