Description:
- A documentary series on the railroads of Canada. This program examines the needs and difficulties of western railways. Railway men from Canadian National and Canadian Pacific explain operating problems. Grain and port officials deride the inadequacy of rail facilities. Various railway personnel, such as conductors, firemen, stewards and station workers, comment on their experiences with wash-outs, rock slides, schedules and a number of other delays and disasters which tend to plague railways. More of their comments are heard at the end of the program. Various administrative personnel for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and Canadian National Railways (CNR) comment on the growth of railways, the prospects for future growth, transportation and storage procedures, the materials shipped, the role of the railways in relation to international markets, and the dependence of railways on other means of transportation. Ralph B. Loffmark, Minister of Industrial Development, Trade and Commerce for British Columbia, comments on the importance of the railways for British Columbia and offers some solutions to remedy the inadequacies of the Port of Vancouver. <30mn>
