  • First part of a Western film. The plot of the complete film is as follows: Larry Lang (William Desmond) has carried the memory of his father's killing by Claude Dutton (Edward Peil) since his youth and is determined to avenge the crime. The townspeople of the small Western border town believe Larry is "plumb locoed" because he employs a rowdy gang of cowpunchers for only a few head of cattle. Dutton is ensconced in Bottle Canyon, the neck of which is constantly guarded by his men. When Dutton's henchman Two-Gun Dan fails to capture Larry, Dutton attemps the job himself. Meanwhile, Larry's cousin Dora Lawrence (Marguerite de la Motte) arrives to make her home with Larry who is to be her guardian. Larry's men are absent, and while Mexican bandit Pedro holds Dora, Dutton searches for a large sum of money hidden in Larry's bed. Larry returns and kills Dutton, then a romance develops between Larry and Dora.

  • 2. Reels one and reel four or five of five. There is no tail credit so it is difficult to determine if the safety is reel four or five of five.
  • 3. Joseph J. Franz, the creator of this film, died in 1970 - under copyright until 31 December 2020.
  • 4. Name of production company may also be Jesse D. Hampton Productions
  • 5. Based on a story by George Elwood Jenks.
  • 6. Source of subject description: American Film Institute Catalog of Feature Films 1911-1020, page 796.
  • 7. The catalogue card for the nitrate indicates this was originally numbered D-0497 but the reel itself has D-57 printed on it. As well, the safety can labels for part one indicate D-0057 and part four (or five) indicate D-0497.
  • 8. The film for part one starts with about 40 frames of a completely unrelated film, perhaps a newsreel about a flood, showing men wading in water and people in a small rowboat handing out what appear to be newspapers.
