  • 1. Material was received from Dawson City in 2 shipments - 506 reels in 1978 and 26 reels in 1980. Of these 389 reels, primarily of American fiction, were transferred to Library of Congress for conversion. Reference copies of some of these reels were returned to NFTSA.

  • Nerwsreel in the series UNIVERSAL SCREEN MAGAZINE, with stories as follows: PREPAREDNESS: On Board a French Man-O'-War. A little visit with the sailors of our sister republic, recently released from a four-year vigil in the submarine infested waters of the Atlantic. This shows a panning shot from the turret to the deck of the ship. The next intertitle, An early morning workout, is followed by a high angle shot of two rows of sailors doing calisthenics on the deck. The next intertitle, Rifle practice is part of their daily training, is followed by a shot, from the same angle, of two rows of sailors doing rifle drills. The next intertitle says Parade drill on deck for the first time since the war began, is followed by shot from same angle of small group of sailors marching back and forth in formation. The next intertitle says A vocation at which every seaman excels, and this is followed by footage of a group of sailors seated on deck, tying knots. Close-up of the hands of one sailor. The next intertitle is The war with Germany is over, so they have one of their own. Shots of a tug-of-war game on deck. The next story is titled New Inventions. Perfecting Automatic Telegraphy. Electrical engineers complete ingenious device which eliminates possiblity of errors in long distance messages. Photographed at Western Electric Laboratory. Two men examine telegraph unit on a table. Eight girls sending telegrams from New York to Chicago simultaneously over the same wire. Long shot of eight women seated in two rows at a table, operating telegraph machines. The messages are punched in a paper tape and dispatched electrically. Close-up of a telegram, which reads in part: New York to Chicago November 12, 1917. Footage pans down to a woman's hands, typing, and then left to the punched tape issuing from the machine. She then feeds the end of the tape into another machine.

  • 3. This may be, in fact, from two separate newsreel issues, one circa 1917 (story 2) and the other circa 1919 (story 1)
