  • Shamrock Defeats Resolute in a Thrilling Sailing Race. Various views of the two racing sloops with billowing sails as seen from another boat and from the air. The Shamrock is Britain's entry. Sir Thomas Lipton, owner of the Shamrock, watches through binoculars, irised in a shot from a sailboat, the Victoria. They start on the 30-mile course at the Ambrose Lightship. Longshot of Resolute, one half-mile in the lead, with her mainsail down on the deck after a halyard broke and of Shamrock passing the stricken sloop. The Shamrock is shown in the background, passing Resolute. Shots of the competing boats and of two sailors inside the cabin of another boat. The sailboats are visible through the window. There are scenes of the race taken from the air, with one sailboat visible in this aerial shot. Resolute is towed to harbour. Sequence on the winner crossing the finish line, having completed the 30-mile run in 4 hours, 24 minutes and 58 seconds. There are two shots of Shamrock, one framed through a doorway. A map shows the course, the length of the course and the spot where Resolute lost her sails. Sir Thomas Lipton is congratulated as he stands behind a huge wreath of flowers while people look on. There is a close-up of Lipton. Elks Hold Torch Parade. Shots of some of the 50,000 delegates parading by torch light in Chicago, Illinois, in a night pageant. men marching in a parade, illuminated only by the torches they carry, and three spectacular floats lit with large spotlights. Giant searchlights sweep the line of march. The final two shots show men marching in the spotlight. Unsinkable Safe Displayed in Boston, Massachusetts. This story shows the inventor of a new safe testing its unsinkable qualities with a man locked inside. A man is helped getting into a safe while spectators look on. Two men help him into the safe and lock it up. The safe, with the man inside, is dropped into the water by a crane. Shots of the safe floating on the surface. The door isopened and the man inside waves a small American flag.. Unveiling of the Titanic Memorial. Lord French, Viceroy of Ireland, marches past an honour guard in Belfast, Ireland, stands by the statue and speaks to the crowd of spectators. He marches toward the camera, passing troops in review. The Viceroy and other dignitaries stand at the base of the statue. He speaks to the assembled crowd. Lord French unveils the statue. Inscription reads "Titanic Memorial." ...to the imperishable men.....gallant Belfast men who lie here...lives on the...Belfast Titanic through collision with an iceberg...on her maiden voyage...Southampton to New York". There is a shot of the gathered crowd. Sulphur Baths for Cattle Mange. In Calgary, Alberta, cattle are forced to go through a steaming bath of sulphur and lime to treat mange. Various shots of cattle moving through a tunnel and down a narrow, fenced lane. The animals are dipped in the steaming vat of sulphur and lime and then have to swim to the other end. Footage shows the vat and cattle swimming through it. These baths were the cause of one fo the greatest cattle roundups in the history of the prairies. There are longshots of the prairie, showing the herds and cowboys rounding them up. Cowboys take a break and one cowboy on horseback is shown holding a calf. The intertitle says the calf is too tired to walk after his swim.
  • Travelling Health Clinic in Rural Quebec. An interititle reads: "The 'Healthmobile', the message of relief and hope to suffering babies. An afternoon with 'The Travelling Health Clinic' specially equipped for the care of the Canadian child." Footage shows a small bus bearing sign "Baby Health Centre -- University Settlement" driving down a street. A house to house method is used to discover sick and ailing babies. Footage shows a nurse bringing babies to Health Mobile from houses, doctors checking babies in the van, babies being weighed, etc. Inter-title states that "the recent Military Service Draft showed that 52% of our 'draftees' were physically unfit due to childhood causes." Panning shot of mothers holding their babies and cut to one of the nurss holding a 5-month-old baby weighing 4 pounds 12 ounces. There is a close-up of the baby. The baby is crying. Final shot of the staff of the travelling clinic, the examining physician and three public health nurses, posed at the back of the van. New Republic Celebrates. The new republic of Czechoslovakia celebrates its great national fête of Sokols. Thousands take part in a demonstration before a children's contest in a large stadium. A high angle medium shot shows a huge crowd filing past the camera as Sokols is celebrated in Prague, Czechoslovakia. People wave small American flags. President Masaryk is keenly interested in the athletic development of the country's children, says an intertitle. There is a medium shot of the President, sitting in a box with other officials, two shots of the large stadium field and groups of children standing in formation. There is a high-angle pan over 10,000 people putting on a drill demonstration. An incomplete shot shows the children moving in unison, in straight lines. <9mn 51s>
